Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NASDAQ:TEVA) is a leading global pharmaceutical company, committed to increasing access to high-quality healthcare by developing, producing and marketing affordable generic drugs as well as innovative and specialty pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Headquartered in Israel, Teva is the world's largest generic drug maker, with a global product portfolio of more than 1,300 molecules and a direct presence in about 60 countries. Teva's branded businesses focus on CNS, oncology, pain, respiratory and women's health therapeutic areas as well as biologics. Teva's leading innovative product, Copaxone®, is the leading prescribed treatment for multiple sclerosis. Teva currently employs approximately 47,000 people around the world and reached $18.3 billion in net sales in 2011.
In 2010, Teva launched 18 generic products in the U.S. and over 300 generic products in European and International markets. Teva boasts the broadest generic product pipeline in the industry. As of July 12, 2011, Teva had 185 product registrations awaiting final FDA approval, including 41 tentative approvals. Collectively, the branded products covered by these applications had annual U.S. sales of over $116 billion in 2010. Of these applications, 126 were "Paragraph IV" applications challenging patents of branded products. Teva believes it is the first to file on 77 of the applications, relating to products with annual U.S. branded sales exceeding $54 billion. As of June 30, 2011, Teva had 2,927 marketing authorization applications pending approval in 30 European countries, relating to 301 compounds in 589 formulations, including 10 applications pending with the EMA.
Following the acquisition of ratiopharm in August 2010, Teva became the generics leader in Europe and increased its presence in key markets.
In November 2011, Teva and The Procter & Gamble Company created a global partnership in over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. This new business model combines P&G's strong brand-building, consumer-led innovation and go-to-market capabilities with Teva's broad geographic reach, its experience in R&D, regulatory and manufacturing and its extensive portfolio of products.
In October 2011, Teva completed the acquisition of Cephalon for $6.5 billion. The transaction reinforces Teva’s long-term strategy of building its branded and specialty pharmaceuticals business through diversification and expansion of the company’s product portfolio and pipeline. The combined company’s branded portfolio represents $7 billion in sales, with a robust pipeline including more than 30 late-stage compounds. The transaction will create immediate and sustainable value in niche therapeutic areas including CNS, oncology, respiratory and pain management. The combined company will become a leader in specialty pharma.
In September 2011, Teva agreed to acquire the remaining 50% interest held by Kowa Company Ltd. in Teva's Japanese joint venture for $150 million. Teva and Kowa announced the establishment of Teva-Kowa Pharma Co., Ltd. in September 2008, and have since grown the joint venture into one of the top five generic players in Japan, in cooperation with Kowa. The joint venture generated sales of approximately $200 million in 2010.
In July 2011, Teva completed the acquisition of effectively 100% of the outstanding shares of Taiyo Pharmaceutical Industry Co. Ltd. for $934 million in cash. Taiyo is the third largest generic pharmaceutical company in Japan, with sales of $530 million in 2010. This acquisition will enable Teva to deliver on its strategic objective of becoming a leading player in the fast-growing Japanese generics market. Following the acquisition, Teva expects to reach $1 billion in sales in Japan, ahead of its original 2015 target.
In January 2011, Teva acquired Corporacion Infarmasa, a top ten pharmaceutical company in Peru, expanding the company's Latin American activity and advancing its position as a market leader in the region. It also completed the acquisition of Theramex, a European-based women's health business. The acquisition will help accelerate the expansion of Teva's women’s health franchise into key growth markets in Europe and around the world. In July 2011, Teva received a European marketing authorization for Zoely™, an innovative combined oral contraceptive (COC) which contains a natural estrogen. Zoely™ is available in a convenient 24 day active and 4 day placebo dosing regimen. Teva holds exclusive marketing rights for ZOELY™ in France, Italy, Belgium and Spain and expects the first launch by the end of the year.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, which typically occurs at an advanced age, affecting approximately 1-2% of the population over the age of 65 and increasing to 3-5% in people over the age of 85. Teva to Acquire Cephalon
